PCC tabs Grossmont’s Thompson as Athlete of Week

JAN. 5, 2009 - Grossmont College basketball player Kurt Thompson is the Pacific Coast Conference’s Men’s Athlete of the Week.

Thompson, a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard from Brisbane Boys College (high school) in Toowong, Queensland, Australia, was an all-tournament selection in the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Central Tournament hosted by San Diego Mesa. He had 61 points, 17 rebounds, seven steals and 11 assists in three games.

Thompson came back with 10 points and two blocks in a 72-68 PCC win over Mesa.

Honorable mention went to basketball players Malcolm Thomas (San Diego City College), Theo Overstreet (Palomar), Johnny Del Bene (Mesa) and Tony Brown (Imperial Valley).

Thomas, a 6-foot-9 sophomore forward from Crawford High School and a transfer from Pepperdine, had 12 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks and two steals as the Knights, ranked No. 2 in the state, suffered an upset loss to Saddleback. He came back Saturday with 25 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks as the Knights beat Palomar 88-65.

Overstreet, a 5-foot, 10-inch sophomore guard from Escondido High School, had 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists against the Knights. Earlier in the week, he scored 21 points as the Comets downed Allan Hancock 88-65 for third place in the Hancock College Holiday Tournament.  That capped a three-game performance in which Overstreet also scored 26 points in a win over state No. 7-ranked Cuesta and 12 points in a loss to state No. 1-ranked Fresno City College. He made the all-tournament team.

Del Bene, a 6-foot-1 sophomore guard from Clayton Valley High School in Clayton, CA and a transfer from Diablo Valley College, scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 69-64 loss to Victor Valley. He came back with 33 points against Grossmont.

Brown, a 6-fopot-3 freshman forward from Libbey High School (Toledo, OH), scored 17 points for the Arabs in a 57-56 loss to Riverside Community College and had 15 points, four assists and three steals in a 74-56 win over El Camino.

An athlete may receive the award only once in his sport’s season. Thomas (Nov. 30), Overstreet (Dec. 28) and Del Bene (Dec. 28) were previous winners.

Women's Athlete of the Week

Griffins’ Simon-West is PCC Women’s Athlete of Week

JAN. 5, 2009 - The Pacific Coast Conference has honored Grossmont College basketball player LaKenya Simon-West as its Women’s Athlete of the Week.

Simon-West, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard from Grossmont High School and a transfer from the University of Idaho, scored 18 points, hauled down 10 rebounds and had four steals in a 67-63 loss to Mt. San Jacinto in the championship game of the 21st Annual Grossmont College Holiday Tournament.

Honorable mention went to basketball players Tiffany Hunter from MiraCosta, Lauren Matheney (Palomar), JaMaisa Allen of Cuyamaca, Annessa Jamison (San Diego Mesa) and Tagisa Togisale (Southwestern).

Hunter, a 5-foot-9 sophomore forward from Fallbrook High School, contributed 17 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots in the Spartans’ 76-71 victory over East Los Angeles. She had 21 points, nine boards and three steals in a 67-56 win over Butte.

Matheney, a 6-foot-3 freshman forward from Palomar Valley High School in Menifee, scored 25 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots in the state No. 4-ranked Comets’ 79-66 loss to three-time defending state champion Mt. SAC in the championship game of the Fullerton College Women’s Holiday Tournament. She had 18 points in a 54-52 upset loss to state No. 18 Orange Coast.

Allen, a 5-foot-5 sophomore guard from Tulare High School, contributed 28 points, five assists and three steals in the Coyotes’ 71-60 loss to Los Angeles City College.

Jamison, a 5-foot-7 freshman guard from Poway High School, helped lead the Olympians to their first victory of the season, a 54-49 win over Los Angeles Trade Tech, with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Togisala, a 5-foot-6 freshman from Serra High School, scored 20 points and had five rebounds and five steals in the Jaguars’ 86-73 loss to Los Angeles Pierce.

An individual may be selected as Athlete of the Week only once in her sport’s season, but may receive honorable mention an unlimited number of times. Hunter was the conference’s Athlete of the Week for the week that ended Dec. 14.
