MiraCosta's Boucharel is PCC Men's Athlete of the Week

JAN. 30, 2012 - MiraCosta basketball player Baptiste Boucharel has been honored as the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference's Men's Athlete of the Week.

Boucharel, a 6-foot-4 freshman guard from Saclay, France and a graduate of Lycee Pothier High School, scored 47 points as the Spartans won both of their games last week.

On Wednesday, led MiraCosta to a 70-62 victory over Cuyamaca with 24 points.

On Saturday, he came back with 23 points and four steals in a come-from-behind, 73-58 win over rival Palomar.

Honorable mention was awarded to Imperial Valley's Tyler Turner, Southwestern's Lawrence Degracia, Cuyamaca's Jake Harr and San Diego Mesa's Dee Huge.

Turner, a 6-foot-1 shooting guard from Kofa High School in Yuma, AZ, came off the bench to score 19 points as the Arabs held off defending conference champion Southwestern 70-69. He went 6-for-8 from the field, 5-for-6 from behind the 3-point arc and 2-for-3 from the free throw line.

Degracia, a 6-foot sophomore guard from Southwest High School, helped lift Southwestern to an 87-76 win over Miramar with 14 points and three steals. He had 17 points, four assists and three steals in the Jaguars' one-point loss to IVC.

Harr, a 6-foot-7 sophomore power forward out of Grossmont High School, had 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and three steals as the Coyotes nearly upset conference co-leader San Diego City College, losing 66-64. Two nights earlier, he scored 12 points against MiraCosta.

Huge, a 6-foot-4 sophomore shooting guard from E.A. Laney High School in Wilmington, NC, scored 22 points in the Olympians' 92-67 loss to San Diego City. He also had five rebounds and two blocks. MiraCosta's Boucharel is PCC Men's Athlete of the Week.

Women's Athlete of the Week

PCAC honors Mesa's Nelson and MiraCosta's Butts

JAN. 30, 2012 - San Diego Mesa College softball player Laura Nelson and MiraCosta basketball player Natoya Butts are the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Women's Athletes of the Week.

Nelson, a freshman left-handed pitcher from Mount Miguel High School, notched victories over Santiago Canyon (by a 9-2 score), Chaffey (12-1) and San Diego City College (6-3) in the Glendale Tournament at Glendale Community College.

Butts, a 5-foot-10 sophomore guard from Escondido High School, helped lead the Spartans to a 2-0 week.

Butts, playing 35 of the 40 minutes as MiraCosta only had six players suited up, led the Spartans to a 60-44 win over San Diego City College with 19 points and 17 rebounds. She came back to score 10 points and haul down eight rebounds, also playing 35 minutes, in a 54-46 victory over defending conference co-champion Grossmont.

Honorable mention was awarded to basketball players Lucille Gleason and Jessica Bautista of first-place Mesa, and Gabby Robledo of Southwestern.

Gleason, a 5-foot-6 freshman guard from Sweetwater High School, scored 14 points, going 5-for-8 from the field, 3-for-5 on 3-pointers and 1-for-1 from the free throw line, as the Olympians (15-7 overall, 7-0 in conference) bounced Palomar 63-48 for their 11th win in a row.

Bautista, a 5-foot-8 freshman guard who also played high school ball at Sweetwater, keyed Mesa's 62-45 win over rival San Diego City College with 16 points and five steals. She went 6-for-6 on field goals, 2-for-2 on 3's and 2-for-3 from the line.

Robledo, a 5-foot-9 freshman guard from Olympian High School who was the PCAC Women's Athlete of the Week back on Dec. 4, helped the Jaguars beat Imperial Valley with 12 points, three assists, three blocks and two steals.
